For my blanket I used the left overs from the Sirdar Happy Cotton Assortment Box (50 shades) - left over yarn from crocheting my Popcorn Floral Blanket which can be found here: with a 4mm Hook
I personally made all my circles first and then used the Slip Stitch ZigZag Join As You Go Method for joining my squares.
If you wish to join your crochet squares AFTER you have made them, you can either sew them together or crochet them together

Abbreviations:
ยท Ch = Chain
ยท Inc = Increase
ยท HDC = Half double crochet
ยท DC = Double crochet
ยท TR = Treble crochet
ยท Rep = Repeat
ยท St = Stitch
ยท Ch sp = Chain space
Standing Treble Crochet: Yarn over twice, insert your hook into the stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop so that there are four loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, and pull through the remaining loops.
Pattern:
Foundation Round: Ch 4 and sl st to join.
Round 1: Ch 2 and turn. Make 12 DC in the ring. Sl st to join. (12)
Pull the tail to close the ring.
Round 2: Ch 2 and make 2 DC in the same st. Rep *2DC inc* in each st across. Sl st to join. (24)
Round 3: Ch 2 and make 1 DC in the same st. Rep *2DC inc, 1 DC* across. Sl st to join. (36)
Fasten off and cut the yarn.
Attach the second colour with 1 Standing TR.
Round 4: Make 1 TR in the same st. Rep *2 DC, 3 HDC, 2 DC, 2TR inc, ch 2, 2TR inc* three times. For the last side, make 2 DC, 3 HDC, 2 DC, 2TR inc, ch 2, and sl st to join.
Round 5: Ch 1 and make 1 HDC in the same st and each st across. For each corner ch sp, make (1 HDC, ch 3, 1 HDC). At the end of the round, sl st to join.
Fasten off and cut the yarn.
Weave in the ends.
