Crochet Half & Half Granny Triangle Shawl WRITTEN PATTERN

USA STITCH TERMS

Hook Size(s): use the size your chosen yarn recommends

For my personal shawl I used 2 and a half Caron Cinnamon Swirl Cakes in the shade β€œOyster” with 2 and ahalf balls of Cygnet Supersoft Aran in the shade β€œWhite” for joining with a 5.5mm Hook

This gave me a shawl size of approximately 76 inches (193 cm) across the top edge and 52 inches (132 cm) along the side edges. I did 36 rows for my granny stripe half.

Abbreviations:

●     Ch = Chain

●     Ch sp = Chain space

●     DC = Double crochet

●     Inc = Increase

●     Rep = Repeat

●     St = Stitch

Standing Double Crochet: Yarn over, insert your hook into the stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop so that there are three loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through two loops, yarn over, and pull through the remaining loops.

Crochet Half & Half Granny Triangle Shawl

Part One – The Granny Stripe Side

Make a magic ring or ch 5 and sl st to join.

Row 1: Working in the ring, ch 4 (always counts as 1 DC and ch 1) and make 3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC, ch 1, and 1 DC. Pull the tail to close the ring.

Row 2: Ch 4 and turn. In the ch sp, make 3 DC. In the ch 2 sp, make (3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC). In the ch sp, make 3 DC, ch 1, and 1 DC.

Row 3: Ch 4 and turn. In each ch sp along both sides, make 3 DC. In the ch 2 sp at the center which makes the peak of the triangle, make (3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC). At the end of the row, ch 1 and make 1 DC with the last 3 DC cluster.

Rows 4-onward: Rep row 3 for as big as you want the shawl to be but make sure your row count is a multiple of 4.

Once done with Part One, turn the shawl so that the peak of the triangle down one side is where you will attach Part Two of the shawl. Depending on how many rows you’ve made, that determines how many motifs you will make.

For example, if you’ve made 20 rows, divide that by 4, equals 5. You will make 5 motifs for the first column, attached along the side of Part One.

Of these, 4 will be squares and 1 will be a triangle as for each column, every last motif will be a triangle.

With each column, you will reduce by 1 motif until you are left with only 1 triangle.

Part Two – The Granny Square Motif Side (Join As You Go)

Make a magic ring or ch 5 and sl st to join.

Round 1: Working in the ring, ch 3 and make 2 DC. Rep *ch 2, 3 DC* three times. Join with a DC st at the top of the first st of the round. Pull the tail to close the ring.

Round 2: Ch 2 and turn. In the same space, make 2 DC. In each ch 2 sp, make (3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC). At the end of the round, make 3 DC in the starting space and join with a DC st.

Round 3: Ch 2 and turn. In the same space, make 2 DC. Between the granny clusters of the sides, make 3 DC. In each corner ch 2 sp, make (3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC). At the end of the round, make 3 DC in the starting space and join with a DC st.

If you prefer to sew your squares together, then complete Round 4 without the joining

Round 4 (to join on ONE side, 1st motif of each column): Ch 2 and turn. In the same space, make 2 DC. Between the granny clusters of the sides, make 3 DC.

In the first corner ch 2 sp, make 3 DC, ch 1, and sl st into the peak (ch 2 sp) of the triangle of Part One. Make 3 DC in the square to finish the corner. To continue attaching the square, you will sl st between the corresponding granny clusters of Part One and make the 3 DC clusters as normal along the side of the square until you reach the next corner. Make the final sl st to join after making 3 DC, ch 1 in the corner then finish the corner and remaining sides of the square as normal.

For subsequent motifs, you’ll be joining by two sides.

Round 4 (to join on TWO sides): Ch 2 and turn. In the same space, make 2 DC. Between the granny clusters of the sides, make 3 DC.

In the first corner ch 2 sp, make 3 DC, ch 1, and sl st into the corner of the square motif above. Make 3 DC in the second square to finish the corner. To continue attaching the square, you will sl st between the corresponding granny clusters of the first square and make the 3 DC clusters as normal along the side of the second square until you reach the next corner.

Make 3 DC and 1 sl st in the corner of the first square and 1 sl st in the join between the clusters. Make 3 DC to complete the corner.

To attach the second side, you will sl st between the corresponding granny clusters and make the 3 DC clusters as normal along the side of the second square until you reach the next corner. Make the final sl st to join after making 3 DC, ch 1 in the corner then finish the corner and remaining side of the square as normal.

You’ll make the triangle motif at the end of each column.

Row 3: Ch 3 and sl st into the corner of the motif above. Make 3 DC in the ch sp of the triangle. To attach the triangle, you will sl st between the corresponding granny clusters of the square motif and make the 3 DC clusters as normal along the side of the triangle until you reach the next corner.

Make 3 DC, 1 sl st in the corner of the square, 1 sl st in the join between the clusters, and 3 DC to finish the corner.

To attach the second side, you will sl st between the corresponding granny clusters and make the 3 DC clusters as normal along the side of the triangle until you reach the next corner.

To finish the triangle motif, you will sl st into the corner and then make 1 DC.

Border Round – once entire shawl has been completed

Attach the yarn between any two granny clusters with 1 Standing DC. Make 2 DC in the same space.

Between every two granny clusters, make 3 DC.

At every motif join, make 1 DC in the first corner, DC2tog with the first DC in the first corner and the second DC in the second corner, and 1 DC in the second corner.

To turn at the corners, make (3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC).

For the ch sp along the bottom of the triangle of Part One, make just 2 DC in each space.

For the ch sp along the bottom of Part Two, make just 2 DC in each space.

For my personal shawl I then crocheted 3 rounds of single crochet stitches - working one single crochet into the tops of each of the stitches from the round below, in the corner spaces I worked ( 1 single crochet, chain 2 and 1 single crochet ) all into the same spot.

Fasten off and cut the yarn. Weave in the ends.
