Crochet Spiral Granny Square WRITTEN PATTERN

USA STITCH TERMS

Hook Size(s): according to your yarn

Abbreviations:

·       Ch = Chain

·       Inc = Increase

·       SC = Single crochet

·       HDC = Half double crochet

·       DC = Double crochet

·       TR = Treble crochet

·       Rep = Repeat

·       St = Stitch

·       Ch sp = Chain space

Standing Single Crochet: Insert your hook into the stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop so that there are two loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through to complete a single crochet stitch.

You can make these squares with 4 separate colours OR alternatively, if making 2 coloured spirals, you will need 2 balls of each colour.

For example, for my black and white sprials, I used this sequence:

Colour A: Black (1st ball of yarn)

Colour B: White (1st ball of yarn)

Colour C: Black (2nd ball of yarn)

Colour D: White (2nd ball of yarn)

I then alternated whether the spiral squares had either white or black border rounds.

Pattern for Square:
When switching between the colours, you will pull up a large loop to make sure the stitch doesn’t come undone while you’re working with the next colour.

Make a magic circle with Colour A.

Round 1: Ch 1 and make 1 SC, 1 HDC, and 1 DC in the ring.

With Colour B, make 1 standing SC, 1 HDC, and 1 DC in the ring.

With Colour C, make 1 standing SC, 1 HDC, and 1 DC in the ring.

With Colour D, make 1 standing SC, 1 HDC, and 1 DC in the ring.

Pull the tail end to close the magic ring.

Each colour will be worked over the stitches of the following colour.

Round 2: With Colour A, make 2HDC inc, 2DC inc, 2DC inc.

With Colour B, make 2HDC inc, 2DC inc, 2DC inc.

With Colour D, make 2 TR, ch 1, 2 TR, 1 DC, 1 HDC, 1 SC, 1 sl st. Fasten off and cut the yarn for Colour D.

Attach yarn for the border in any ch 1 sp with 1 standing SC.

Border Round 1: Ch 2 and make 1 SC in the same space and in each st and sl st across.

There should be 13 st for each side (you will make 1 SC in each sl st as well as the st below that it corresponds to).

For each corner ch sp, make (1 SC, ch 2, 1 SC).

At the end of the round, sl st to join.

Border Round 2: Ch 1 and make 1 HDC in the same space and each st across.

For every corner ch sp, make (2 HDC, ch 2, 2 HDC). At the end of the round, sl st to join.
